Trustee Positions

Two vacancies – paid roles

About us

The Trust for the Destruction of Synthetic Refrigerants was formed in 1993 to manage synthetic refrigerant gas collection and destruction in Aotearoa New Zealand. Since 1993 the Trust, initially through its voluntary RECOVERY scheme and now through its Cool-Safe programme, has prevented more than 1,325,000 tonnes of CO2eq greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to 32,500 tonnes of ozone depletion.

Our trustees are appointed to widely represent all refrigerant industry sectors in New Zealand. We also have an independent Chair from outside the industry to offer non-partisan experience and insight.

Building on the work of the voluntary RECOVERY scheme, Cool-Safe’s mission is to inspire and enable the refrigerants industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2035.

To achieve that Cool-Safe is:

·        Building New Zealand’s first arc plasma plant to destroy synthetic refrigerants onshore

·        Introducing a national, industry-wide buy-back scheme to maximise refrigerant recovery

·        Developing an accreditation and certification scheme for industry that will ensure best practice refrigerant management and prevent refrigerant leakages

·        Increasing public understanding of refrigerants and their environmental management

·        Applying for accreditation to be the Government’s Product Stewardship Scheme for a priority product (refrigerants)

The Cool-Safe programme of work is supporting the refrigerants industry to transition to mandatory refrigerant regulations in 2024.

Time commitment

The Trust holds 10 scheduled in-person board meetings each year. These scheduled meeting are supplemented with online meetings as required. The Trust also holds an annual roadshow, typically at 3-5 locations around the country that trustees are expected to attend.

In addition, Trustees are expected to assist the executive with individual projects based on their specific knowledge and experience.
