Emergency refrigerant recovery – Auckland

2023-01-31

Due to the Auckland floods, there will be an increased number of appliances, like fridge freezers and air conditioning units, that contain refrigerants that will need to be removed. Find out how you can do that, without harming the environment.

For household items/whiteware containing refrigerants:

As part of the big Auckland clean-up we’re working with Auckland Council to make sure any whiteware that contains refrigerants, like refrigerators or heat pumps, have their refrigerant gases captured. That will mean we can safely destroy them and protect the atmosphere from being harmed by their release.

Here are the ways you can dispose of those flood damaged items - please make sure you separate them where you can so they can be easily identified:

1. You can drop your household items that can no longer be used due to the floods, for free, at nine transfer stations across the city. You’ll need to call 0800 22 22 00 first. Find out more here.

2. If you can’t get to a transfer station, you can call 0800 22 22 00 to ask for it to be collected from your kerb.

3. You can also drop flood affected whiteware at a community recycling centre. Find out more here.

4. If there are skips on your street, please make sure you put any items that contain refrigerants, like refrigerators or heat pumps, on top of the skips so the refrigerant can be easily identified and captured.

For refrigerant technicians:

To help recover the refrigerant for destruction, Cool-Safe has access to 20kg recovery cylinders we can loan on a first come basis to refrigerant technicians.

Please contact Janine Brinsdon 021 337870 or Ben Fechney 021 955 317 for details.

Kia kaha Auckland, take care and stay safe.
